And so, Bush is GONE!

George W Bush is not the President of the United States. God that sound good! Barack Obama is the President of the United States. That sounds even better.

So I was in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia for the inauguration. That meant that I had to stay up until 3am (and well past that) to watch the 12pm EST inauguration of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the United States, and wow, was it ever worth it.

Sure, the right-wing Bush-appointee Supreme Court Justice John Roberts fucked the oath up for everyone, forcing Barack to do it again the next day and ruining a sacred moment in history, but oh well. It could be worse. John McCain could be President and Sarah Palin could be Vice President.

So congratulations America. The world is in love with you again. Good job!

Now, just solve the global economic crisis, global warming, and get out of those pesky wars and all will be well.

Congratulations President Obama. You inherit George W. Bush's shitstorm. Good luck. The world is with you.

One Week to Go!

Look at that, I’m updating my blog and it hasn’t been another 444 days! Aren’t I amazing?

Well, my friends (whoa, I just pulled a McCain), we have only one more week to get through until the worst President in the history of the US (or any country) finally leaves office, making way for the first elected President since 1996. It has been a long, hellish eight years for those of us in the world who give a shit about important things like politics. Hell, it’s been even worse for people in the Lone Star State, who have had to put up with this prick since 1994.

When Barack Obama is inaugurated next Tuesday, we will at last be on the other side of the stolen 2000 election (not to mention the stolen 2004 election), and hopefully a new era of non-criminality in the White House will begin. You see, the sting of the 2000 election has never quite worn off.

It feels like only yesterday that I watched the media declare Florida for Al Gore and danced around my living room like a lunatic, knowing that a Florida victory meant the election was a lock for Gore. Then came that horrible moment when the results were flipped and Florida—along with the Presidency—were declared for George W. Bush. I still remember Bernard Shaw making the announcement on CNN.

I also remember staying up late into the morning to see the results thrown into question, and Florida moved into the “too close to call” category. I remember being so hopeful at that moment, thinking that with a proper recount the results would surely be flipped again, and Gore would be the next President. Of course, we know what happened over the next couple of months. I have never felt so robbed, and so powerless, as I did when the Supreme Court appointed Bush the winner.

Looking back over the last eight years and the world we live in today, the stolen 2000 election still irks me so much, because of the enormous damage that has been done as a result. And people said that there was hardly any difference between Bush and Gore (I’m looking at you, Mr. Nader). I knew at the time that Bush was going to be a disaster, as did most educated people; but so many people fell for his cowboy shtick, and look where it got us: a massive hole in the NYC skyline; hundreds of thousands if not millions dead in the Middle East; eight years of zero progress on the fight to slow Climate Change; a Supreme Court that will lean fascist for decades; a worldwide economic crisis that could make the Great Depression look like the good ‘ol days; and countless other horrific consequences that will take Barack Obama at least two terms to even start to reverse.

With all that said, perhaps the worst part of the last eight years was living in a world where the USA was no longer a beacon of democracy and hope, but instead a place where a gang criminals operated highest office in the land. It left me with a kind of empty feeling nearly every moment of every day. It’s as though every moment spent in this country was tainted by Bush’s presence. And so many people did actually support this guy! Worse, a significant percentage of the American public still supports him! Dumb motherfuckers…

One week from today I will finally be able to move on from the 2000 “election.” We may have been robbed of two terms of Al Gore, but at least we will now be treated to a Barack Obama Presidency. No matter what you say about this guy, at least he was legitimately elected, and by all accounts appears not to be a treasonous, Nazi-like criminal.

So here’s to moving on. After eight long years, the healing can finally begin. The only thing I’ll miss about W is the comedic gold we’ve been treated to over the years. That must be why Sarah Palin has remained in the news. My theory is that the comedians have got some kind of secret deal with the News Media to keep her in the spotlight for as long as Barack Obama is President. That way, The Daily Show, Colbert Report, SNL, Leno, Conan, Letterman and all the other comics will have all the material they need. Oh gosh darnit, it’s gonna be a great eight years, you betcha!

Time for an update...

Ok, it has been 444 days since I last updated this blog, and BOY did they fly by! I think it just proves my whole point about time and space and blah blah blah... It feels like only yesterday I made those back-to-back foundational posts in what was then intended to be a regularly updated blog. Somehow life took over and I, uh, forgot to write a new post for 444 days in a row. Then, just a few minutes ago, I thought, hang on, I haven't updated my blog today, or yesterday...

So here we go. I am actually breaking the lengthy dry spell and updating the damn blog, and it feels good.

Wow, time sure did bring some amazing changes (as it usually does) over the last 444 days. When I last updated the blog, Hillary Clinton was the favorite for the Democratic Presidential Nomination, and the election was well over a year away. Now, we’re only two weeks from the inauguration of Barack Obama, and the END OF THE GEORGE W BUSH ERA!

Way back when I last updated this blog, a lot more people had jobs. I didn’t have a real job then, and I still don’t, but a lot of other people did who now don’t.

On October 19th, average US gas prices were about $2.87 per gallon and rising. Now gas is only $1.66 a gallon and it feels like the 90s again, except for that whole no-one having work thing. But at least people can drive around aimlessly looking for “help-wanted” signs for cheap.

In October 2007 there was immense carnage and terror in parts of the Middle East. In January 2009, the entire region is now at peace. Oh wait—sorry, I accidentally caught a newspaper headline out of the corner of my eye, and apparently, that last statement is not true.

I don’t remember seeing nearly so many—uh—Blueteeth everywhere 444 days ago. Now everyone is wearing them. I think they make people feel important, like what they do is so crucial, they don’t have time to extend their arm and lift a phone to their ear to have a chat. I hope time will end this fad.

So I think I’ve demonstrated conclusively that a lot can change in 444 days, and a lot more can change in 888 days, and so forth, all thanks to the four-dimensional structure of our perception of the Universe.

I’d like to thank space-time for getting us through the last eight years—by “us” I mean, those of us who survived this nightmarish “Bush” period. It wasn’t all bad personally, but it did suck pretty hard when it comes to world affairs, and I care about that shit.

Here’s hoping that time now slows down as the world potentially enjoys—for at least a eight years or so—a world in which real positive change occurs, such as ending the Iraq and Afghanistan wars, solving the global economic crisis, and making a genuine effort to solve the worst global crisis of them all: climate change. I know, that is probably a pipe dream, but then, back in October 2007, so was the whole notion of Barack Obama being elected. Right now, 444 days after my last entry, President-elect Obama’s kids started their first day of school in DC. How amazing is that?

Of course, Obama will only be the President of a country of 300 million people; but perhaps he can inspire the rest of the world to change its ways. That will have to happen for the planet to be saved and the economy to be restored. I think it would help if the worst environmental-offender of them all set a positive example this time. Can that happen? Will the economy rebound? Will the Iraq war really end? Will the members of the Bush Administration be prosecuted for their numerous, monstrous crimes? Will Yao Ming lead the Houston Rockets to an NBA championship? Will Americans finally get real healthcare? Will Marijuana finally be legalized, taxed, and heavily regulated? Will I find meaningful employment? Will the US Auto companies survive? Will I update this blog again? Time will tell
